The presentation of an enlarged picture of the members of Capt. Thos. Espy Post, G.A.R., to the Post by Carnegie Lodge, B.P.O. Elks, took place Friday evening.
The event was made a happy and enjoyable one, and will not be forgotten by the old soldiers for a long time. The affair took place in the handsome club rooms of the Elks. The turn-out of the G.A.R. was the largest they have had for some time. Out of a total membership of 106, about 75 of them were present.
They said the Elks were past masters at entertaining and they meant what they said. Had it been possible, they would liked to have made every Elk a member of the G.A.R.
The visitors began assembling at 7:30 and for an hour enjoyed themselves inspecting the club house, playing billiards, pool, etc. At 8:30, to inspiring music, all fell into line and marched to the lodge room on the second floor. Here the presentation was made and the visitors entertained with music and addresses. Exalted Ruler, Thos. C. Pascoe, made the presentation speech. Rev. J. A. Snodgrass responded. Other addresses were made by Ex-Burgess Jno. L. Prestley and W. A. Love. Music was furnished by the Elks quartette, and W. M. Cramp, who sung two old-time war songs. The Elks songs were patriotic and the addresses timely, and both sentimental and humorous.
While these exercises were going on up stairs, the entertainment committee was busy below. At the close of the program all again fell into line, and to the tune of "Marching Through Georgia" they beat a happy retreat down the stairs, everyone apparently joining in the good old war song.
Reaching the lower floor, the visitors found that a change had been made, and a sumpteous spread of the season's delicacies lay before them. They were given an order to attack which was obeyed to a man. Not a deserter was to be found.
The presentation of the picture and the manner of giving it was a happy thought and the G.A.R. appreciated it to a man. The picture is finely finished and handsomely framed. The size is 4 x 5 1/2 feet. It is now permanently placed on the wall of Capt. Thos. Espy Post Memorial Hall in the Library building.
