One page diary from Fredericksburg,1862, folded in half resulting in 4 pages. First 5 lines on p. 2 in ink, remainder in pencil. The spellings are the writer's, but lines are arranged here with dates flush left for easier reading:

December 5 we went on picket and did not take our tents with us and it started to rain and snow and snowed all night and then froze the next day and the next day and it thawed and the next day we went back to camp and lay there all day and night and the

11 they started to shell the town this morning and we marched 2 mile and was drew up in battle line and lay there all night and the
12 we marched a mile nearder and lay all day

[3] with our knap sacks on in site of the city and it is a burning yet so we marched backed into the woods and encamped for the night same
13 we marched out in front of the city a gain and stacked arms and lay there un til about 9 OClock and then we started for the city and we marched to the river and the rebs threw shell at us thick and they lit all around us but we crossed the rive and went down the first street and lay a bout 5 minutes and then we was ordered back to try our hand so we was withdrew up in battle line and we got orders to charge bayonets so the brave 155 went in to it and after fiering about 20 rounds we was order to retreat so we retreated back under a bank and we lay there until about

[4] 12 O'clock at might and we was ordered get some amination so we marched down into town and got it we got our amimition and we went rite back and lay there until morning
14 then the rebs sharp shooters got to picking at us and we got to picking at them and we kept a fiering at them all day but there was not camnading [commanding?] that day so we marched backed into town after dark and lay there all night
15 we drew our rashing and are now ready again for the field so we lay there in the street all day and they shell us all day and at night we was move up the stret furder and our picket line was scalled in so we lay there until about one o clock and then we was ordered up and we marched down another street about a half a mile and there lay til 4 oclock in the morning and then we was ordered to retreat so you had better believe that we did we cross the river and went back to our old camp and on our march it rained hard and we got ringing wet and we lost our tents on the battle ground at freericburgh our loss is about 9 killed and 59 wounded
