- Looking at Lincoln: Political Cartoons from the Civil War Era
- "Looking at Lincoln: Political Cartoons from the Civil War Era"
presents political cartoons illustrating how people responded to
Abraham Lincoln and his policy of Emancipation. Looking at Lincoln
offers insights into how racism was ingrained into 19th Century
American life. These cartoons provide historical context for discussing
issues we debate today. April 24 - May 21

Library & Music Hall’s annual Civil War program begins with a

- The 2008 presidential election took center stage at
the Andrew Carnegie Free Library & Music Hall (ACFL&MH) on
Monday, April 7 when the Allegheny County Young Republicans and the
Young Dems of Allegheny County debate key campaign issues. KDKA
anchorman Ken Rice moderated the program, “Democracy in Action:
Debating the Issues.”
The program is made possible through the sponsorship of the Rotary Club of Carnegie and Hughies Audio Visual Services.
“This
year’s presidential election has truly captured the public attention,”
says Children and Youth Services Librarian Erin Tipping. “The
Library is at heart a civic organization that is in the information
business. We wanted to engage the public in the most fundamental
exercise in democracy – informed decision-making when voting.”
- Reflections,
a solo exhibition of paintings and drawings by artist Yelena Lamm, was
on display at the Andrew Carnegie Free Library & Music Hall
(ACFL&MH) March 30th through April 20th.
“Yelena was a lead designer of
the beautiful posters and art work for our last three benefits, as well
as our Carnegie Carnegie logo,” says ACFL&MH Executive Director
Maggie Forbes. “She’s helped give the Library & Music Hall a
remarkable style. We are excited to have Yelena’s art here,
and as we’re delighted that art has become an increasingly important
part of our pubic programming,” says Forbes.
- Jazz at Carnegie Carnegie Hall - Joe Negri Headlined
April
is Jazz Appreciation Month. Legendary guitarist and Pittsburgh
icon Joe Negri performed with his quartet at the Andrew Carnegie
Free Library & Music Hall on Saturday, April 5.
During the second half of the performance members of Carnegie’s
burgeoning jazz community took the stage – on their own and with
Joe and his side men.
WDUQ’s Mike Plaskett emceed, sang and lent his long standing Jazz imprimatur to the evening.
For Jazz at
Carnegie Carnegie Hall, Negri was joined by Max Leake on piano, Tom
Wendt on drums and Tony DiPaolis on bass. Music was drawn
from the classic American Songbook with pieces by Irving Berlin, Billy
Strayhorn, Johnny Mandel – and a salute to his early hero the
renowned Belgian Gypsy guitarist Django Rienhardt.
The
second half of the program kicked back. Ron Wilson performed
with "Joe's guys," and then Joe returned. Then Salvato's 3rd Street
Gallery gang including Haywood Vincent on piano, Ron Bosetti on alto
sax, Clement Rolin on valve trombone and vocalist L'Tanya Williams took
over.
